An officer's perspective.(Water Rescue)

To ensure that a co-ordinated and safe water rescue is carded out it is imperative that all rescue personnel are familiar with the skills and techniques required. To ensure 'safe as possible' rescue procedures were employed by West Yorkshire Fire Service's specialist rescue teams it was important that those officers mobilised to supervise water related incidents were as familiar with water rescue techniques as the teams.

I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the brigade's Technical Rescue Officers and, as such, attended Outreach Rescue for the Water Rescue One Technician programme at the centre in North Wales.

My experience of water related incidents before my attendance on the course amounted to a couple of barge fires on canals and pumping from open water supplies at time, so I Mended the course with a little trepidation. …
