SEPTEMBER 1953

* CFO Geoffrey Blackstone Hertfordshire Fire Brigade provided a detailed account of the Fire Services of the Netherlands. He drew some comparisons with regard to fire cover and salaries. He noted that a Dutch recruit fireman earns 57 guilders per week (5.14s.0d [pounds sterling]). After three years' service this rises to 68 guilders per week (6.16s.0d [pounds sterling]).

* In his annual report to Parliament for 1952 HMCIFS Smith noted that brigades in England and Wales attended approx 82,400 incidents, excluding chimney fires. On December 31, 1952 the strength for the Fire Service in England and Wales stood at 18,680 professional firemen, 487 firewomen, 244 ambulance crew, 15,158 retained and 146 retained women. …
