The Fire Service in England is run by local fire authorities--county councils, combined fire authorities and in urban areas joint fire and civil defence authorities. This system has worked well and allowed fire authorities to build increasingly strong working relationships with other parts of local government and the voluntary and business sector. They are potentially key players in bodies such as local strategic partnerships and crime and disorder reduction partnerships.
