Danger of ditching partnership: arguing against fast-forward change in favour of incremental improvement, the Fire Brigades Union sees some of the proposals for institutional reform as undermining important concepts such as social partnership and democratic accountability and that the proposal to abandon national fire standards is 'socially irresponsible'.

The FBU is now deeply engaged in formal discussion with ministers and civil servants about the recently published White Paper, Our Fire and Rescue Service. Whilst the union strongly supports the strategic change to a risk based Service with growing emphasis on fire prevention, we see the proposal to abandon national fire standards to be socially irresponsible. We also tear that the process is being rushed and that it will be under-resourced. And some of the proposals for institutional reform appear to undermine important concepts like social partnership and democratic accountability.

We warmly welcome the proposed devolution to Wales. As things stand all parties agree that the NJC will continue to set terms and conditions right across the UK Fire Service. …
