Fire deaths increase as injuries fall.(News)(Brief Article)

Latest fire statistics from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister show that brigades attended just over one million fires and false alarms during the 12 months to September 2002, two per cent more than in the previous 12 month period. The total number of fires attended increased by three per cent to 529,400.

The increase was due to a six per cent increase to 293,700 in the number of secondary fires and an eight per cent increase in deliberate vehicle fires, to 81,400. There was, however, a four per cent fall in the number of fires in buildings to 107,000, including a five per cent fall in domestic fires to 65,600. …
