* The cover showed the disastrous and epic overnight sleeper train fire in Taunton, Somerset. The leading carriage was well alight on arrival and entry was made difficult by locked doors and confined spaces. Of the 300 passengers, 11 died and a further 12 were rescued and some resuscitated by the trackside but it was not yet known how the fire started. It is interesting to note that an urgent message to British Rail for trains to be stopped was not sent until alter the Stop.

* Canvey Island had been identified as an area of especially high risk by the HSE, containing as it did a complex of refineries, a processing plant, explosive substances and highly flammable liquids. However, they reported a picture lot residents which "should not result in fear and worry". …
