Co-responders launched at Cheddar Fire Station: the official launch of the co-responder unit at Cheddar took place recently at Cheddar Fire Station. The evening was formally opened by StnO Nigel Deane, who welcomed everyone to the station to witness the presentation of the defibrillator unit.(Special Services)

Co-responder units have been introduced in some of the more rural parts of Somerset and are mobilised to medical emergencies in order to provide initial life saving support to patients until ambulance crews reach the scene.

The scheme is a four-way partnership between the British Heart Foundation which provides the defibrillator, West Country Ambulance which provides all initial and continuation first-aid training together with certification of competence standards to firefighters in the co-responder crew, the local community who raise vital funds for other equipment for the unit and the brigade providing the crew and paying for call-outs.

In his opening remarks, StnO Deane paid tribute to all his staff and the effort they had made in making the partnership such a success in its early beginnings. …
