As a serving firefighter in Buckinghamshire for almost 20 years, I have seen the number of cars on our roads increase dramatically, their sound systems increase in volume and sound proofing on cars improve.

The result is that motorists do not hear or see emergency vehicles until the last seconds, re suiting in longer attendance times to incidents and more dangers to the public and emergency workers.

Recently, while driving my car I received a traffic information signal from the local radio station which cut out my CD to warn me of a road problem--a facility many will be familiar with. I thought this system could be used to help emergency vehicles and cut response times, as well as warn road users. …
