Social inclusion theme for fire academy.(Social Cohesion)

Seventy per cent of the 6,000 fires in North Wales are deliberate, of those 90 per cent are started by young people. A work experience scheme initiated by the fire service was recently piloted with 17 students--several of whom experienced difficulties in mainstream education--undergoing a similar course to basic firefighter training.

North Wales Fire Service has a large geographical area which serves six local authorities and has split its boundaries into three administrative divisions. Previous applications for work experience placements were sent direct to the three divisional headquarters.

Because firefighters on stations could be called upon to turn out to an emergency at a moments notice, these young people could not be allowed to attend a station on a full time basis as there was a strong possibility that they would have no supervision. …
