Tough racing and inclement weather: were encountered at the 2002 European Firefighter Sailing Challenge. With a London Fire Brigade team entered and an FSSAA committee meeting being held, not to mention a few days in the lovely Cornish town of Falmouth how could I stay away? (sailing).

So I booked a B&B and 369 miles/6 hours later I had arrived, into the B&B a submariners' shower (one whole tin of sprayed deodorant applied all over) and off I headed for the quayside feeling ever so nautical.

Now they may have been dressed in Musto, Regatta and other similar sailing attire, but a Firefighter has that look that cannot be hidden and sure enough the first people I suspected to be in the Job turned out to be from West Sussex, Adrian Murphy showed the way to the Royal Cornish Yacht Club who hosted much of the event.

There sure enough I found the LFB, Mick, George, Stuart, Mark (left his canoe at home), Dave, Pip, Richard, Gary and supporters politely refusing more free wine then remembering their manners and necking the contents of their glass to make room for a top up. …
