Sport to unite the Service: as the Fire Service already has a national set-up geared towards delivering this, contact has been made with the Fire Service Sports and Athletics Association (FSSAA) and some good progress has been made, so I thought I would update you with my plans and preparations so far towards NWFS and FSSAA getting women's sport off the ground. I have decided to concentrate on a few sports for the first 12 months rather than scattering my efforts at all the sections and have decided to focus on six main areas:

Rugby, Football, Running, Walking and Mountaineering, Netball and Hockey.


Mike Shears, Helen Christmas, Kathy Mullaley and Sam Buckingham met at Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service HQ on March 5, 2003 to prepare their initial plan and proposal. Already eight women have shown interest. Sam is an England International with Herts Fire Service while Kath is an Irish International with London Fire Brigade.

A FINDS message went out advising all the new section of the dates of the first training session, which has now gone ahead. …
