IPDS progresses despite industrial problems: IPDS is still progressing, despite some setbacks in deadlines. Here, the IPDS working group's progress and goals are outlined, looking forward to the publication of guidance and a manual. The IPDS is the foundation upon which all other Fire Service initiatives depend. The success of New Dimensions work or Integrated Risk Management Plans rests on the competence of our people and only one thing can deliver that competence--the Integrated Personal Development System.

The original start date for IPDS was April 1, 2003 but the industrial action has delayed this and many people have been asking about the progress towards implementation. The following article explains where we are in relation to a number of issues:

* Standards (and role maps);

* Point of Entry Selection Tests;

* Assessment Centres;

* Development Programmes;

* Personal Development Records;

* Quality Assurance;

* Communication;

* Legislation; and

* Retained Staff.

STANDARDS (INCLUDING ROLE MAPS)

The role maps for Operational Firefighter, Control Operator and Watch Management (Control and Operational) have been agreed and published on the Edexcel and FirePod web sites (www.firepod.org.uk).
