I feel that it is important to respond to the points raised in Andy Gilchrist's article 'two men and a van', in order to clarify any misunderstandings. The article refers to special operational procedures put in place during recent 'spate conditions' in Greater Manchester. It questions the use of light vehicles crewed by two professional firefighters used to assess the public's calls for help to small outdoor fires.

This is a procedure which has been in place for many years and was further developed in 1995. In Greater Manchester we have highly trained, highly professional firefighters who are more than capable of making assessments of whether a fire needs the attention of a full crew or not. …
