Toast to craft beer: small independent craft brewers continue to gain share of total US beer market while increasing sales and volume.(MARKET UPDATE)

Despite the lagging economy and a challenging domestic beer market, US craft brewers saw sales rise 5.8 percent by volume in 2008 along with a 10.5-percent jump in dollar sales, according to the Brewers Association. The craft beer industry also increased its share of total US beer market volume from 3.79 percent in 2007 to 4.04 percent last year and increased its share of retail sales to 6.3 percent. The increased market share indicates that consumers are increasingly shifting from mass market brews to fuller flavored craft beers as well as continuing to support local breweries. More than 1 million new barrels of beer were sold in 2008, and close to half of those barrels were beer from craft brewers, according to the Brewers Association. …
