Having a good hand in the future is critical to the staying power for telecommunications service providers and vendors. Many in the industry have speculated that optical networks will be a trump card, and that premonition finally appears to be coming true.

That solidification started with Cisco Systems' billion dollar optical buying spree and has been followed by numerous companies partnering with or acquiring optical networking companies, as well as successful IPOs. Last week, Redback Networks took the optical plunge with a $4.3 billion stock purchase of a little-known California-based optical networking company, Siara Systems, which doesn't have a product available yet. Siara plans to build equipment that collapses multiple network elements or technologies into one box for the metropolitan and access markets. …
