UNIQUE VERIZON METRO DEAL SHIFTS LUCENT INTO HIGH GEAR.

The three-year metro equipment contract Verizon Communications awarded to Lucent Technologies last week was unremarkable in many respects - a two-year-old request met by an incumbent vendor - but the unique nature of the deal is having repercussions for several vendors across two markets.

Verizon is the first RBOC to buy Lucent's monster optical cross-connect, the LambdaUnite, according to a Lucent spokeswoman. More importantly, it also is the first RBOC - and the second customer after wholesaler Edison Carrier Solutions - to use the LambdaUnite and the Metropolis DMX suite of add/drop multiplexers (ADMs) together as one solution with a value greater than the sum of its parts. …
