Wanted: Teachers of geriatrics -- A national initiative is needed to train all doctors in the care of older patients.(Brief Article)

No one should graduate from a medical school or residency training program without having acquired the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to treat older patients. As readers of Geriatrics are well aware, the diagnosis, care, and treatment of older patients can be quite complicated and different from the management of younger patients. Ten years from now, most doctors will spend at least one-half their time caring for older patients. Yet fewer than 600 physicians in the United States today have the requisite medical, academic, and scientific training to teach geriatrics to the upcoming generations of health care professionals.(1)

In 20 years, we will need an estimated 2,400 academic geriatricians. …
