Fertility doctor charged with fraud over methods. (Cecil B. Jacobson)

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Cecil B. Jacobson, MD, says he was practicing good medicine. The government says he was practicing fraud.

Dr. Jacobson, who for 12 years ran a busy fertility clinic in Northern Virginia, went on trial this month on charges related to his controversial methods.

The 55-yera-old physician, who performed the first amniocentesis in the United States, is accused of using his own sperm to impregnate patients through artificial insemination. Prosecutors say he fathered as many as 75 children.

The patients allegedly were not told that Dr. Jacobson was the donor. In at least one case, authorities say, the patient thought she was being inseminated with her husband's sperm only.

Dr. Jacobson has been charged with 53 counts of criminal fraud and perjury, which carry a maximum penalty of 285 years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. …
