The lumber group includes establishments engaged in cutting timber and pulpwood; merchant sawmills, lath mills, shingle mills, cooperage stock mills, planing mills, plywood mills, and veneer mills engaged in producing lumber and wood basic materials; and establishments engaged in manufacturing finished articles made entirely or mainly of wood or related materials. Establishments engaged in integrated operations of logging combined with sawmills, pulp mills, or other converting activity where logging is not separately reported are classified according to the primary product shipped.
The furniture group includes establishments engaged in manufacturing household, office, public building, and restaurant furniture as well as office and store fixtures. Also included are establishments primarily engaged in the production of millwork and those manufacturing wood kitchen cabinets.
The paper group includes establishments primarily engaged in the manufacture of pulps from wood and other cellulose fibers and rags. Also included are establishments primarily engaged with the manufacture of paper and paperboard and the manufacture of paper and paperboard into converted products like paper bags, paper boxes, paper that is coated off the paper machine, and envelopes. Also included are establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing bags of plastics film.
The printing and publishing group includes establishments engaged in printing by one or more common processes like letterpress, lithography (including offset), gravure, and screen. Also included are establishments that perform services for the printing trade, such as bookbinding and platemaking. This major group also includes establishments engaged in publishing newspapers, books, and periodicals, regardless of whether or not they do their own printing.
