McDonald's Corp. franchises and operates restaurants in the food service industry. These restaurants serve a value-priced menu in more than 100 countries. The company also has a minority-ownership interest in U.K.-based Pret A Manger. Under the conventional franchise agreement, McDonald's owns the restaurant land and builds or secures long-term leases for the restaurant sites. Franchisees provide a portion of capital by investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurant businesses, and by reinvesting in the business over time. Franchisees pay the company rent and royalties based upon a percentage of sales, along with initial fees. Under the developmental license arrangement, licensees provide capital for the entire business, including the real estate. The company only receives a royalty and initial fees. Franchisees/licensees purchase food, packaging, equipment and other goods from independent suppliers that have been approved by McDonalds. The company has food quality assurance labs around the world to ensure that high standards are consistently met. Independently owned and operated distribution centers distribute products to most McDonald's restaurants. The lunch and dinner menu include the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Filet-O-Fish, Chicken McNuggets and McFlurry desserts. Breakfast includes the Egg McMuffin, Sausage McMuffin with Egg, and McGriddles.
