The Holt Manufacturing Company and C. L. Best Tractor Company merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1925, which was reorganized in 1986 to become Caterpillar Inc. The company's principal lines of business are machinery, engines and financial products. Caterpillar designs, manufactures and markets construction, mining and forestry machinery as well as engines for Caterpillar machinery, electric power generation systems, locomotives, marine, petroleum, construction, industrial, agricultural and other applications. The company also remanufactures Caterpillar engines, a variety of Caterpillar machine and engine components and provides remanufacturing services to other companies. Catepillar's subsidiaries provide financing, insurance and support for their customers and dealers with offices throughout the U.S., Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America. Franklin Power Products was acquired in 2007, enhancing the remanufacturing operations and expanding the company's machining operations in the engine manufacturing business. The company made several acquisitions and finalized joint ventures in 2009 that expanded its international operations.
