The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of industrial sand and gravel during 2002, based on estimated world production figures. It was difficult to collect definitive production data of silica sand and gravel in most countries because of the range of terminology and specifications used for silica.

The United States remained a major exporter of silica sand in 2002 with about 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). It shipped sand to almost every region of the world. The export status of the United States was attributed to its high quality and advanced processing techniques. They meet almost every grade specification for silica sand and gravel.
