H.K. plans to end live chicken sales to stem bird flu risk.

The Hong Kong government proposed ending the sales of live chickens at the retail level Friday to help stem infection and transmission of avian influenza.
''Chances are high that avian influenza would become endemic in poultry in the region. Hong Kong will be susceptible to avian influenza outbreaks again in the future unless additional preventive measures are adopted,'' said Yeoh Eng-kiong, secretary for health, welfare and food.
Hong Kong has experienced four highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu outbreaks in poultry since 1997.
The outbreak in 1997 resulted in 18 human infections with six deaths.
