Quintet of the Americas is a traditional woodwind quintet founded in Bogota in 1976 and transplanted to New York City in 1979. While four of the current five members appear to be Americans (no notes on the individual players), they not only capture the vital rhythms, stylistic inflections, and light rubato that are part of the Colombian folk style; but they play with the kind of total ensemble demanded in flamenco, where man, woman, and musicians must be 100% attuned to one another's flow, motions, and nuances. Pacing is infectious. And all five are total masters of their instruments.
